Papers, photographs, binders, artifacts, and newspapers belonging to Lillian Waugh, professor of Women's Studies at WVU and gender equality activist. This collection contains personal family photographs, correspondence, and research about Waugh keeping her surname after marriage. Protest and activism papers, photographs, and artifacts include assorted materials related to Waugh's involvement in the National Organization for Women (NOW), the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) campaign, gender equality movements, and anti-war protests. The collection features research, correspondence, and curriculum from Waugh's time as a WVU professor. This collection consists of records for the Montana affiliate of the National American Woman Suffrage Association including correspondence, organizationa, a speech by Jeannette Rankin, newsletters of the Montana Equal Suffrage State Central Committee, ephemera, writings, and miscellany. After the passage of the suffrage amendment to the United States Constitution the name was changed to the Good Government Committee. [OVERSIZE MATERIAL: map case]. (SC 567)

Throughout the women's suffrage movement, rhetoric was used as a powerful tool of persuasion to convince men that women should have the right to vote. It was also used as a tool of persuasion to convince women to join the fight for suffrage. One of the most influential rhetoricians in the movement was suffragist, Carrie Chapman Catt, who was able to use both. This study aims to determine how women's suffrage leader, Carrie Chapman Catt, used persuasion through her speeches to win the 19th amendment. This study specifically investigates one speech to the all-male United States Congress and the other to an all-female suffrage group. This study is a textual analysis that uses Kenneth Burke's seven tactics of identification. Specifically, this study investigates when and how Carrie Chapman Catt changes her rhetorical speaking style using Aristotle's three forms of proof: ethos (credibility), pathos (emotion), and logos (logic). Following this, the results are compared to Genderlect theory to determine how Catt uses her rhetoric to appeal to both genders through gender differences in language. These results suggest that Carrie Chapman Catt changes her rhetorical speaking style to identify with men and women differently to achieve suffrage for all.

The Beecher family forever changed the American political landscape. The reformers who emerged from this family spent their lifetimes challenging the moral and social inequalities that shaped American domestic policy; their impact is profound and often researched by scholars all around the country. Yet there is one exception--the lack of attention given to Isabella Beecher Hooker who challenged the Victorian definition of a woman. Isabella was a woman ahead of her time. She fulfilled the domestic obligations society expected of her while wanting gender equality. With the attention solely focused on her family little has been published about Isabella and in particular her role in the women's movement. She witnessed great social change and was in the center of a scandal that gripped the nation, yet her narrative is all but forgotten. In order to establish the role of Isabella B. Hooker in the women's movement the research was focused on her collection housed at the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center in Hartford and the Connecticut Woman's Suffrage Association archives at the Connecticut State Library. Isabella Beecher Hooker's collection extends her entire life including her journals, letters to her husband, children, and fellow suffragists Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth C. Stanton. The CWSA archives reflect the instrumental role Isabella played in shaping the early suffragist movement in Connecticut. The study of Isabella focuses on her suffragist activities and analyzes what motivated her to seek participation and what forced her to withdraw from the movement causing her to be forgotten. The primary reason for the neglect of Isabella was the image portrayed by her family as a monomaniac who suffered depression. This stigma discredited her work and paved the way for future generations of historians to overlook her.

From the mid nineteenth century until ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920, women in Connecticut worked for the passage of woman suffrage legislation on both a state and federal level. On August 26, 1920 Tennessee became the thirty-sixth state to ratify the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution giving women the right to vote in any local, state, or national election. An initial reaction would be that Connecticut suffragists failed in their efforts to make Connecticut one of the first thirty-six ratifying states. On September 21, 1920, the Connecticut Legislature ratified the Nineteenth Amendment and Connecticut became the thirty-seventh ratifying state. This thesis will examine the seventy-two year woman suffrage movement with emphasis on Connecticut's fifty-three year woman suffrage movement, what Connecticut suffragists accomplished, and the post suffrage period. In addition, this thesis will examine both nineteenth and twentieth suffrage activism in Connecticut, the individuals involved in the various suffrage organizations, and the methods used by suffragists to accomplish their goal of enfranchisement. This thesis will further demonstrate that Connecticut suffragists were willing to utilize unconventional methods to achieve woman suffrage including participation in civil disobedience, being arrested, and going to jail. In conclusion, this thesis will show that the obstructive methods used by Connecticut Governor Marcus Holcomb prevented Connecticut from being the thirty-sixth state. In view of these obstructive tactics, Connecticut suffragists overcame overwhelming odds by becoming the thirty-seventh state.

Special edition newspaper and badge with attached ribbon issued on occasion of the 85th Anniversary of Woman Suffrage. These were handed out at a special event held at Elizabeth Moore Hall on the campus of West Virginia University in 2005. The newspaper contains articles regarding the history of the Woman Suffrage movement; the badge features text stating "Celebrate Victory, Betty Ireland: WV Secretary of State".

Papers of Lenna Lowe Yost, prominent leader of West Virginia's suffrage movement and the first woman to chair a major political party national convention. She was born in Basnettville, Marion County in 1878, the daughter of Jonathan S. and Columbia Basnett Lowe; died in Washington, D.C. in 1972, at the age of 94. Papers include clippings of articles by Yost, correspondence, biographical material, speeches, and other material. Subjects include prohibition, West Virginia State College (including 1929 bulletin with photographs), Republican committees and conventions, the State Board of Education, and West Virginia University. An addendum of 2003/10/23 includes correspondence, clippings, and other material documenting Yost's work in facilitating ratification of the equal suffrage amendment in the state of West Virginia in the period July 1919 - March 1920.
